Apparantly, New Line is seriously considering making The Hobbit but Peter Jackson's been scraped for director. He probably cost too much for New Line as they like to make things for fewer dollars. Check out this thread on MinasTirith.com for more info.

According to IMDb.com, it's supposed to come out in 2009.

I thought it was already being made. But that was probably just a rumour.

No. About two years ago, some kid put together clips of FotR and some other movie to make people believe that they were making The Hobbit. Here it is: http://youtube.com/watch?v=VYWPBIoM2uc

Well Peter said he was GOING to do the Hobbit. A long time ago. That was before he was so huge and known. That is stupid. Hopefully this guy is amazing.

It's likely to be quite different from the PJ films. I'm not even sure Sirs Ian McKellen or Ian Holm will be cast as Gandalf and Bilbo. I should hope that Andy Serkis gets cast as Gollum though.

They need to keep them somewhat the same though. People are going to have certain views of Middle Earth and be completely messed up when they see this new everything. Stupid not finishing what they've already studied.

I think you meant "started," Jenny. I wonder what's on your mind right now.

that's interesting, cuz i just recently seen a story of it on T.V. saying that PJ was gonna direct it and that S.I.M. was gonna be Gandalf...hmm then again don't believe everything you see on tv.

I still love you though T.V.

Well, it looks like MGM has gotten the rights to the movie and that Peter Jackson, Fran Walsh (his wife) and Phillipa Boyens (co-writer for LotR) are writing the script for the movie!

According to IMDb, the movie is set to release in December 2011 with principle photography set for late 2009.

Peter Jackson and his wife are listed as the executive producers, though he will not be directing. Guillermo del Toro, who has worked on Blade 2 and the two Hellboy films and nominated for the 2007 Oscar for Best Writing, Original Screenplay for his film El Laberinto del fauno, will be directing the movie.

For more information, check it out at IMDb.

Well, if you haven't heard, you've been living under a rock. It IS happening. The Hobbit (directed by Guillermo del Toro (GDT) and produced by Peter Jackson) is in motion. Fran Walsh and Phillipa Boyens have been called back to help write the script. Also returning will be Sir Ian McKellen as Gandalf and Andy Serkis as Gollum. John Howe is back for conceptual design and Allen Lee has also been referenced by GDT. As well, Howard Shore is confirmed back for the musical score. The Hobbit begins pre-production in 2009 with filming scheduled for 2010. The film is set for release in December 2012 (likely, Wednesday December 14th or 21st).

The idea of the project will be to produce a five film "cannon". That's right, I said five. The Hobbit, The Fellowship of the Ring, The Two Towers, and The Return of the King; that's four. What's the fifth? I'm glad you asked.

The fifth film, currently identified as F2 (Film Two), will cover some period in time between The Hobbit and the LotR films. Likely, this will focus on the White Council, Saruman's fall from grace, and the banishment of the Necromancer from Dol Goldur. If you're wondering where my speculation on this comes from, it comes from reading an interview with PJ and GDT; from the little they said, this seems to me the most likely.

Now, I believe there are several people we can expect to see. While it's not likely that Sir Ian Holm will be back to play a younger Bilbo, there are several other people we might see. Hugo Weaving we will likely see as Elrond in Rivendell. Liv Tyler as Arwen may show up in Rivendell, Caras Galadhon, or in a meeting scene with Viggo Mortensen. Speaking of him, he might be seen or referenced in F2 concerning his wars in Rohan and Gondor as Thorongil. In which case, we might see Aragorn attack Umbar. This is unlikely, but I would really like to see this part of the history of Aragorn played out. If we do, we would also possibly see John Nobel as a young Denethor, jealous of the love his father (Ecthelion II) has for Thorongil (which would explain a great deal in why Denethor despises Gandalf and why he treated Faramir and Boromir the way he did). As well, I think we can expect to see Cate Blanchet back as Galadriel. There also may be a cameo by Orlando Bloom in Mirkwood. Don't expect to see John Rhys-Davies as a dwarf, because he has said he'll never do prosthetics again.

The release date for F2 is December 2012, very likely Wed. Dec. 19th, exactly 10 years to the day from the release of FotR.

And a mere 6 years later... here we are. Eagerly anticipating the first part of Peter Jackson's next trilogy! I am ridiculously excited and personally think that it will live up to all that I expect it to be.

Obviously they've managed to get most of the important characters back (Gollum, Gandalf, etc). But Bilbo is going to be played by Martin Freeman, but Ian Holmes will be back as "old Bilbo"???

Either way, it looks amazing. I think they did a FANTASTIC job on the dwarves.... excepting Fili and Kili maybe... The mood  almost seems a bit lighter, and they did something different with the Gollum animation; but then I guess he's quite a bit younger so that's explainable.

Anyways I have no idea if anyone is going to even realize that I wrote this. But I miss online discussion! :p
